If it does not hurt anyone it cannot be a sin, this statement was the foundation of my application on determining whether my desires were sinful or not. I used this as the basis of my argument a few years ago when a well known homosexual celebrity walked out of a church service because the pastor was preaching against homosexuality. This celebrity posted about his reactions on social media out of disgust.  I got into a heated debate with a friend when the post  trended on social media. I defended the celebrity and my argument was that it is unfair to rule homosexuality as sin because this desire does not cause harm to anyone. My friend on the other hand was adamant that it is a sin because the Bible says so. We ended up agreeing to disagree. I grew up in Soshanguve, a township north of Tshwane. When I was in primary school there was a rumor in the neighborhood about a family that was allegedly practicing witchcraft. A very good friend of mine whose mother was a traditional healer would always tell us about the activities of this family to warn us against them. Everytime my friend would tell these stories to warn us I would respond by telling him witchcraft only affects people like him who believe, but it would not have an impact on me because I come from a church going family who believed in the existence of God. When I got frustrated by the failure of my denominational church teachings to provide me with real life solutions to real life problems, I aligned myself with a New Age slogan “Hail to thyself for I am my own master, I am my own God I need no shepherd for I am not a sheep ”. The slogan appealed to me because there was no obvious link between what I was being taught at my denominational church and my daily life experience.This led me to conclude that the God I am searching for on the outside must reside within me, meaning I am my own god.
